Google Is Offering Buyouts to US Employees Throughout the Company

Google is now offering voluntary buyouts to its U.S.-based employees across several key departments, including its core search division.

According to a statement given to mesite, the tech giant’s Knowledge and Information division, which includes the search, advertising, and commerce teams, has formally started a “voluntary exit program.” Furthermore, Google confirmed that similar buyout offers have also been made to its central engineering teams.

“Earlier this year, some teams implemented a voluntary exit program with severance packages for U.S.-based Googlers, and several more are now extending the offer to support our key initiatives ahead,” said Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini.

Mencini also noted, “Several teams are asking remote employees living near offices to return to a hybrid work model, aiming to increase in-person collaboration.”

This move follows several layoff rounds in 2024 and a significant workforce reduction in early 2023, when roughly 12,000 employees—around 6% of the staff—were let go.

Alphabet (GOOGL), Google’s parent company, saw its stock rise about 1% Tuesday, though it remains down over 5% in 2025. After-hours trading showed little change.
